Menotti's magical Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors is full of gorgeous melodies, infectious rhythms, and rich harmonies shot through with sparkling dissonance. The short and spicy aria "This is my box" is one of many excerpts that should be much better-known to pianists, but it has languished in a volume of "Selections" that was hastily thrown together by G. Schirmer in 1951, and is so riddled with editorial problems that it is almost useless. This edition of Kaspar's aria is more consistent, more playable, and more informative than what Schirmer provides -- and it restores the aria's final three measures, which are inexplicably missing from their "official" version!
