A Spirit of Hope
I am young bass who attends Augusta University as a Music Education major. My professor recommended this set of pieces for my repertoire this semester.

I’ve grown up in America. I’ve matured in America. I’ve laughed and played here during my childhood, and yet I’ve never understood the hardships that America has brought my Father, my Father’s Father and my kin that came before me.
Healing, Death, Oppression, and Protest all brought to life many feelings I did not know I had. It is unbelievably saddening that one could be in a situation such that your only hope is not of this world; however, it is even more so empowering. My Father, my Father’s Father and my kin who came before held onto that hope with all their might so that I could be here—a black man in college, majoring in what I love, surrounded by people who support me.

Rosephanye Powell’s arrangement wraps around these Spirituals like a warm and tender embrace. The arrangement shines a light on the words and makes you hear them in a way you have not heard them before.

These are not melancholy pieces. These are pieces to be sung with a smile in your heart. To be sung while reflecting on how all of that hope that accumulated for so long has come to fruition.
