The ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE - GUITAR TRIO/large ensemble

Derek Hasted writes "Written for the English version of a German TV series back in the sixties, the full orchestral suite comprises a large number of 8 and 16-bar "themes", and I must confess they all seem strangely familiar and I've no idea why!

I have kept the same key as the original, and the three parts take it in turns to play the main melody, the countermelody or harmony line and the bass part. The tune part is labelled each time it moves.

The section marked 8va goes up to fret 17, though it will work played instead at the notated pitch. In a large ensemble, both versions at the same time would add another texture to the piece.

I have put decrescendo "hairpins" on the repeated chords - the aim is to make the repetitions sound like echoes, and stop them cutting through the long tune notes as they fade.

I have slimmed down the original a little - there were many repetitions of one of the minor key themes, with woodwind, strings, keyboard and a haunting cello all taking turns. In a guitar trio, we lose the different timbres and the repetition starts to sound overdone. And the middle section with a constant low drone in the bass doesn't move across to guitars with limited sustain. That having been said, the piece still lasts for almost 4 minutes with a rousing opening and closing section.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!"
