"Wind Beneath My Wings" (also known as "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and sometimes "Hero") is a song written in 1982 by American songwriters Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley. The first recording of the song was made by Australian singer Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album. However, the track was never commercially released, as producers felt Kamahl’s style didn’t align with the genre. The song was later recorded by several artists, including Roger Whittaker, Sheena Easton, and Lee Greenwood, and saw early chart appearances by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983). The most successful version came in 1988, when Bette Midler recorded the song for the soundtrack of the film Beaches. Released as a single in early 1989, Midler’s rendition reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of that year. It went on to win Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA for selling over one million copies in the U.S. In 2004, it was ranked No. 44 on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs list, honoring the greatest songs in American film. Perry Como also recorded the song for his final studio album, Today (1987). Although he wanted it released as a single, RCA Records declined. Como was reportedly so frustrated by the decision that he vowed never to record for the label again. This arrangement is for flute with piano accompaniment.
