Composed by English Traditional Folk Song. Arranged by Paul Franklyn Taylor. This edition: pdf. Opera, Renaissance. Score. 2 pages. Paul Taylor #1392082. Published by Paul Taylor (A0.1832362).

The song appears in act 4 of Shakespeare's Othello (1603) . It is sung by Desdemona prior to her murder by her husband Othello, Her husband (Othello) was convinced by Iago that she was cheating on Othello. Thus, this song (lyrics included with the piano part) foreshadows her eventual death at the hands of Othello. It brings to mind the situation of Dido from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas who expires on her funeral pyre after Aeneas leaves her. The Renaissance musical qualities are evident chiefly in the combination of the tonic major and minor modes (in this case Dmajor and dminor) as well the well as the new fashion of the fauxbourdon (paralell thirds).
