BWV 847 - Prelude and Fugue II - from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Since this piece originates from the Baroque period, it was generally performed on the harpsichord, but today it is often performed on the piano. The prelude and fugue together form a complete work, numbered BWV 847. Let's see how I transformed it into a orchestral piece.
Firstly, this prelude frequently uses sixteenth notes to create a continuously flowing sensation. Bach specifically employed numerous chords to build tension, resolving it with further chords to achieve emotional tension and release. In the symphonic arrangement, I especially combined long and short notes with dynamic crescendos and diminuendos to enhance tension and then release it.
Moving on to the fugue, a fugue consists of multiple voices, simply put, several melodies performed together. Naturally, if not carefully designed, the final performance could be disastrous. However, in reality, it is not, thanks to Bach's wisdom in composing fugues, where he balances both chords and melodies. In my arrangement, I use multiple instruments to converse with each other, reflecting the characteristic simultaneous development of multiple melodies in a fugue. Since, during the Baroque period, this piece was often performed on a harpsichord without dynamic effects, this posed a challenge. I believe a symphony must have rich dynamics, therefore I endowed the melody and chord developments with ample dynamic variation, giving the music a certain tension.
