The Water Is Wide is a traditional Scottish song. The lyrics of this love song were composed, in part, around 1600. Cecil Sharp published the song in 1906, and many versions have appeared since then. Benjamin Britten made an arrangement of it, and it has been sung by James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, and The Seekers. Claire Pelletier, one of Québec’s finest voices, offered her own version under the title Trop loin l’Irlande.
Here is my version for quartet, in the form of a theme and variations.
The Water is Wide est un air traditionnel écossais. Les paroles de cette chanson d’amour ont été créées, en parties, autour de 1600. Cecil Sharp a publié cette chanson en 1906. Plusieurs versions ont vu le jour depuis sa publication. Benjamin Britten en a fait un arrangement, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris et The Seekers l’on chanté. Claire Pelletier, une de nos belles voix du Québec, nous a offert sa version sous le titre Trop loin l’Irlande.
