As I composed this piece, the Holy Spirit invited me to ponder the life of the watchman of the ancient world. I learned that guarding city walls or open countryside was perilous, yet vital. Watchmen, then and now, put their lives on the line every day and night.
Those of us who are Christians are all called to be sentinels I thought of parents staying up all night to look after a sick child, family praying for non-believing relatives, and priests, pastors and spiritual leaders interceding for the world. And then there are watchmen fighting the internal battles of addiction and trauma: they, too, are called to watch and pray.
"The Watchman" could be played at any mass or liturgical service that blesses, honors and commissions servicemen and women, the police, firefighters and first responders. It is especially fitting for memorial services honoring the fallen, and on occasions like July 4th, and Memorial Day.
This is a unison chorus, but look for my two-part arrangement that would be ideal for youth chorus or a SATB choir.
