Inspired by the fantastic-medieval beauty of the fortress that crowns the picturesque town of Castell'Arquato in the Val d'Arda (Province of Piacenza, Italy). The opening chorale evokes the solemn, ancient, and dark atmosphere of the castle, then gives way to a more festive representation of the medieval period, with variations of the chorale inspired by Italian medieval dances such as the saltarello. The work was originally conceived as a brass ensemble for a composition competition in Italy, and was later reworked for band, expanding the range of colors and adding percussion.
