A standout arrangement
I performed this piece with two other experienced adult flutists and two adult bell ringers for a Sunday service during Advent at my church. The 3 flute parts are equal in range and difficulty (a nice change from most flute ensemble music). Everyone has the melody and accompaniment at some point. The 6/8 and 9/8 meters, and the switching between them, could be challenging for players with less experience. The piece sounds nice with or without the handbells so don't be afraid to try it if you don't have access to the bells. The bells do add a nice church bell effect, however, and the part only requires 5 bells. It could be covered by one advanced player or several less experienced players, which would reduce or eliminate bell switches. Overall this is a fun arrangement to play and the arranger made the most of some pretty flute harmonies, which went over well with our players and with the listeners as well.
