Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download
The Superpolyunsaturated Blues was inspired by the work of two musicians who were highly influential to my development as an arranger, Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones.
The tempo starts as a moderate shuffle with the initial melodic theme stated by unison saxes. The chart shifts into a quasi-latin 12/8 feel for an extended tenor sax solo. The sax section then goes into a soli, which is soon joined by trombones for some contrapuntal jousting. Trumpets enter the fray 12 bars later to bring the section to a climax. The time is cut in half and the mood become more somber for a slow blues solo by the first trombone. A bit of group improvisation leads to the final climax.
Instrumentation: standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), five trumpets, four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums. The fifth trumpet is optional.
Brass parts are high. The lead trumpet has several high Ds, E-flats, and one high F.
