Published by Andrew Jacobi (A0.1892691).Haf Gengr Hriðum (Hahlv gehn-guhr ree-thuhm) is the ninth number from Christopher Tin’s song cycle, The Drop that Contained the Sea. This cycle features ten songs, each in a different language from around the world. The theme surrounds the water cycle in nature and its continuous journey through the skies, earth, and sea. There is a seven-note motif that is heard throughout the cycle (heard in measure 89). This movement embodies the feeling of going through a hurricane. The original text comes from the Poetic Edda, the most important source for Norse and Germanic mythology. “Haf Gengr Hriđum” translates to “The Storm-Driven Sea” from Old Norse.
About this Arrangement
This arrangement takes the original and rescores it for a modern-day Wind Ensemble. The key is adjusted to better fit a band’s performance. This piece may be used as a stand-alone or paired with the final movement, “Waloyo Yamoni.” There is an optional attacca into the final song of the cycle.
