Sound Of Music, The- for String Quartet with Opt. Bass. “The Sound of Music” is the opening title song from the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music and later the 1965 film. It’s sung by Maria as she stands on an Austrian hillside, expressing the joy, freedom, and spiritual uplift she feels in nature. This arrangement opens with the verse using an “echo” effect. The melody stays primarily in the 1st Violin part, but the “answers” are woven in and out of the other parts. The bridge uses piu mosso, rit. and meno mosso to great effect. The song modulates as a final gesture while broadening out it’s tempo. Approximately 3:20. Intermediate level.
