Difficult, challenging, rewarding...
Where other pieces give the voice of Christ to a soloist, Wienhorst gives it to the chorus, and with amazing effect. The entire work, with its opening and closing choruses, is about 20 minutes and extremely moving--appropriate especially for music during the Veneration of the Cross, for example. You need a good choir to pull it off, but if you have a good choir, why not give them excellent music? On WFMT in Chicago, this work was featured every Good Friday for many years; also listed as one of the 100 core choral works of the 20th century by Herford & Decker (along with the composer's Missa Brevis).
