Michael Albaugh says, "The Search for Eternal Essence was written for flautist Julie Sooy and given its world premiere at the Bowling Green State University New Music and Arts Festival in the fall of 1994. Mosaic in formal structure, the melodic material is entirely octatonic in linear construction, taking advantage of the many extended techniques that the flute is capable of. The two pitches 'E' at the end of the work represent the eternal essence - hence, the search is now complete.".
