Short piece for small symphony orchestra. Duration : 1'30"
Synopsis :
In the quiet valley of Sleepy Hollow, somewhere in the hills of New York State, a legend has haunted people’s minds for generations. It is the tale of a Headless Horseman, the ghost of a Hessian soldier, who roams the dark roads in search of what he has lost. Washington Irving made it the centerpiece of a story in 1820. Since then, the road leading to this village has not been the same after nightfall.
In the heavy stillness of the night forest, disturbed only by the cold shadows of the tall trees, something lies in wait, motionless. In the distance, a faint flicker pierces the darkness, followed by the dull, hypnotic pounding of hooves. To the steady rhythm of the horses’ steps, a carriage travels through the night, driving its oblivious passengers, blind to the menacing shadows surrounding them. The flickering lantern keeps the darkness at a distance for a while. Then the tumult fades away, giving way once more to silence.
Composed for a Small Symphony Orchestra, The Road to Sleepy Hollow allows us to witness this procession. The bumps of the road are reflected in the score. The horses’ footsteps beat out the rhythm. And despite the convoy’s apparent nonchalance, something in the harmonies suggests that the forest already knows the story’s ending.
For now, the carriage moves forward. For now, all is well. Sleepy Hollow lies down the road.
