Published by Marc Donatelle (A0.1808127).Thomas (“Blind Tom”) Wiggins was born in 1849 into a slave family, blind at birth, and from accounts likely autistic. At a very early age he could accurately imitate natural sounds like bird songs and rooster crows with his voice.
After hearing the piano being played by the slaveholder’s daughters, he couldn’t be kept away from it. He would sneak under the window, or under the floorboards of the house to listen to the piano.
By age 4 he could play the music he heard from the daughters. By age 5 he composed his first tune, "The Rainstorm" after a hearing an afternoon storm roll in.
The piece starts with a happy simple melody. Soon the sound of distant thunder is heard, gradually getting closer and louder. The storm violently breaks out, then passes leaving the sounds of drops hitting the tin gutter on the roof, which fascinated young Tom. The happy melody then returns.
It is incredible that any 5-year-old could compose such a descriptive piece for piano, let alone one who was blind, and not formally trained.
Rainstorm lends itself well to the string quartet and would be a nice addition to a light classical or educational program.
