De Procession of the Nobles is het bekendste muziekstuk dat is overgebleven van een ambitieus project dat door geldgebrek nooit is voltooid. Vijf componisten, aan aantal orkesten, koren en balletscholen zouden er aan deelnemen, met als doel een enorm stuk totaaltheater te creëren. Dat mislukte door gebrek aan geldschieters en onderlinge strijd volledig, maar leverde wel deze prachtige compositie op. Mlada beschrijft de geschiedenis van Prinses Voislava, die haar vriendin, Prinses Mlada, vermoordt om de liefde van Mlada's verloofde Prins Jaromir voor zichzelf te kunnen winnen. De geest van Mlada -uitgebeeld door een danseres - weet Jaromir in een droom te overtuigen van de gruwelijke daad van Voislava. Jaromir neemt wraak. Morena, de godin van de onderwereld, wier hulp Voislava had ingeroepen om de geest van Mlada te verdrijven, wreekt de stervende prinses. Een helse storm zaait dood en verderf. In het slotkoor van de opera brengen de geesten van de overledenen hulde aan de in de dood verenigde zielen van de geliefden Jaromir en Mlada.

The Procession of the Nobles is the best-known piece that survived an ambitious project which was never completed due to lack of money. No less than five composers, several orchestras, choirs and ballet schools were to participate in what should become an enormousshow-piece of comprehensive theatre. The project failed because of lack of sponsors and internal conflicts, but it provided this magnificent composition. Mlada tells the story of Princess Voislava who kills her friend Princess Mlada because she is in love with Mlada’s fiancé Prince Jaromir. Mlada’s spirit – personified by a female dancer – succeeds in convincing Jaromir in a dream of Voislava’s cruel act. Jaromir revenges himself. Morena, goddess of the underworld, invoked by Voislava to chase Mlada’s spirit, avenges the dying princess. An infernal storm brings death and destruction. In the final chorus of the opera the spirits of the deceased pay a tribute to the souls of the lovers Jaromir and Mlada united in death.
