I wrote this full, lush piano solo arrangement of the piece as part of a personal creative challenge in 2019-2020. I wanted to write arrangements of songs that I thought were important: either in the way they touch listeners, in how they are used, or how they have stood the test of time.
"The Prayer" fits all three!
"The Prayer" is a beautiful song written by David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager. The song's most famous arrangement is as a duet sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Both artists have used it as solos on their albums, and have sung the song with other artists. (Josh Groban and Charlotte Church have a beautiful version too)!
The song has been used in weddings, religious gatherings, funerals, and films. It earned a Golden Globe Award and was also nominated for an Academy Award and a Grammy award. This arrangement makes use of triplets (groups of threes) in the left hand against eighth notes (groups of twos) in the right hand. I like to do this to add some rhythmic interest. (Teachers teach playing threes against twos by chanting "nice cup of tea" while they play it!).
The song is written for Early Advanced - Advanced players because of this polyrhythm, dense chords, and expressive, rubato (elastic stretching of tempo) playing. If you perform this arrangement, you should play it the way a singer would sing it (cantabile style). The most important thing for this type of piano instrumental music is to always bring out the melody and to play as expressively as possible.
