The Passenger by Iggy Pop Divisi - Digital Sheet Music

By Iggy Pop

In an interview with The Guardian in 2016, Pop said "The Passenger" was partly inspired by touring with David Bowie: "I'd been riding around North America and Europe in David's car ad infinitum. I didn't have a driver's licence or a vehicle". The song captures this feeling in five verses with just a few changes of the lyrics and the iconic repeated la-la-la chorus driven by the endless swinging pulse of the song. All four parts get to sing the melody. Sometimes the sopranos are split. Pulsating patterns give the arrangement a constant forward momentum that only stops for a few bars of a calm homophonic section. Although the parts are easy to sing the task is to keep the momentum going and still have the dynamic changes and the changes of sound built a constant musical dramaturgy leading to the end.
