Each volume contains a preface in three languages reflecting the latest in scholarly research and a critical report with key information concerning the sources and textual criticism. In honor of the bicentenary of Joseph Hayden's death, Henle published these very affordable study scores of all of his oratorios, following the musical text in the Haydn Complete Edition, but have also collected them together in a slipcase. Aside from the musical text, each volume contains a preface in three languages reflecting the latest in scholarly research and a critical report with key information concerning the sources and textual criticism. These study editions are a feast for the eyes and have been produced with long-term use in mind. All in all a total of almost 2,000 pages of Henle Urtext filled with oratorio artistry – Henle's gift to the world of music!

When I bought the box set for Haydn's oratorios, I went in expecting the Creation (Die Schpfung) and the Seasons (Die Jahreszeiten) to be two of his greatest works - they are. However, the vocal version of the Seven Last Words of Christ (Die sieben letzten Worte) and especially the Return of Tobias (Il ritorno di Tobia) are also splendid works of their own. All four oratorios reproduce the text of the scholarly Joseph Haydn Werke, the quality of I can personally attest to, as I own several volumes from it. Unlike many other study scores reproduced from that edition, these four scores also reproduce the art page featured at the start of each complete edition volume. The prefaces are present in several languages, including English, a system that is reproduced in the notes and comments. The source traditions of all works are thoroughly explained, and the works are a joy to listen to in full. For value and accessibility, this box set cannot be overlooked.

Granted, these are not priced as Dover scores would; if you merely want a decent version of the Creation you should go to their score. If you are interested in all the works, however, they are offered together here for a very fair price compared to the full-size scores of the same pieces. The bindings are sturdy enough to last an age. Unless you need (or really want) full size versions of the scores you need look no further.
