Although the original hymn has several verses, this arrangement develops just two sections to capture the intent of all verses. The first section, in 3/4 time, reflects the somber tone associated with Christ's crucifixion, and the awe felt by the composer as he reflected on the cross and its meaning. The second section, in 4/4 time, takes on a more joyful style which focuses more on God's grace through Christ's death and resurrection. This happy, but yet somewhat restrained dance-like swing style, accomplishes this emotion in a most meaningful way. The extensive use of a plucked (pizzicato) double bass helps to effectively garner this emotion. The piece ends in a quiet and thoughtful manner which is reflective of the cross "...on a hill far away...".
