Although this holiday favourite is usually heard as a waltz, this arrangement for Big Band is set in up-tempo 4/4 swing time. Written with amateur big bands in mind, there is enough to ensure experienced adult musicians have fun without being burdened by too many technical difficulties. A high impact tutti introduction is followed by an understated exposition of the tune on the piano in the style of Count Basie. Muted trumpets are then accompanied by the trombones and sax. The short bridge is led by the saxophones before the trombones restate the theme. The middle section is open for solos with backing to be played second time only. After the solos we modulate from Bb to F for an invigorating shout chorus which maintains maximum energy through the brief coda. Your audience will be especially happy to hear the piece around Christmas time, but it can be played as a lively feelgood tune at any time of the year.
