The Lifting of the Bronze Serpent is an original choral work inspired by the scripture in Numbers 21, where the people of Israel grumbled to Moses about their predicament in the wilderness. The LORD sent a plague of snakes on the Israelites, snakes that bit and killed them for their sin of rebellion. However, the LORD gives grace to the repentant. When the Israelites confessed their sin to Moses and asked for deliverance, the LORD provided a way: through looking up to a serpent fashioned of bronze, the Israelites would not die by the bite of the snakes.
Thousands of years later, Jesus points back to this section of scripture in his conversation with Nicodemus in John 3, where Jesus compares the salvation that He brings to that of the bronze serpent, as both were lifted up for the deliverance of God's people. This verse demonstrates God's love through deliverance from the curse of sin, specifically through the sacrificial lifting up of Jesus on the cross.
The Sanctus, a sacred text derived from Isaiah 6 and Psalm 118, has been used throughout the centuries by Christians as a "lifting up" of praise to God. Thus, the response to Jesus being lifted up to bring eternal life to His people should be one of looking to Him and lifting up of His name in praise, as He is the fulfillment of the bronze serpent.
These three texts served as inspiration for the piece, especially in the context of writing a choral piece that could tell a narrative story using the direct language from scripture, while also allowing the music to capture the emotions of the text. Additionally, this piece contains elements of inspiration from Middle Eastern music, providing a framework by which the listener is transported back in time to the style of music that would be associated with the Israelite people. Finally, the Sanctus movement of the piece evokes traditional sacred music, showing that the lifting up of Jesus is for all peoples of all times.
