Der Text zu Harry Partchs Komposition The Letter stammt aus einem Brief, den der Komponist von Pablo, einem Landstreicher-Gefährten, erhalten hatte. Pablos Zeilen werden über ein sanftes Ostinato gelegt, das Partchs Stimmführungsverfahren tonality flux verpflichtet ist und durch Einwürfe der Streichinstrumente angereichert wird. Zwischen den einzelnen Briefabschnitten werden zudem kurze, vom Ostinato harmonisch abweichende Instrumentalpassagen eingestreut.
