This extraordinary and powerful song was written for the musical of the same name which was set around the decline of shipbuilding in Tyneside (in the north-east of England.)
It uses Christian allegory to tell the story of the sailor who returns home to the last ship built. There are many other meanings to take from the song, for example the last ship representing the end of our lives, and this waiting for everyone, no matter the station in life.
It is in a lilting 6/8 time and starts gently but moves through some more powerful sections recalling the noise and fury of a ship in a storm.
It is rated as intermediate - there are some tricker sections but also some repeated passages which will lighten the load. I would say it is at the difficult end of the scale.
