Effective solo piece
I remembered this piece from when I was in high school thirty years ago and pulled it for a current voice student who needed a piece for her high school concert. The folk song style of the song as well as its rather simple but effective accompaniment allowed both the accompanist and singer to pull it together on pretty short notice. It came across as one of the best pieces of the evening - due in large part, of course, to the ability of the young lady doing the singing, but also because the piece instantly engages the audience in its three verses of story telling. Highly recommended piece for young singers as the range is just over one octave and it yields a great sense of accomplishment on the part of the student.
