The Journey is a piece for string orchestra. It has three main sections: the opening A section that is the start of the journey, the B section that is the struggle in the middle, and the refined and very altered A section, heavily influenced by the B section.
We begin this with feeling of hope with the prospect of starting. The inspiration for this opening is the famous Chinese proverb:
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
This section is simplistic in nature, and only infuenced by mainly one section. This is meant to represent the person who is taking that "single step."
We move from this into the B section, the more turmoil filled and trepidatious section. It's filled with a sense of longing and even loss at what we gave up to begin our journey. There is throughout the pervasive feeling of hope to push forward, and there is a drive at the end of this section to propel us to our final destination.
The final A section comes back with a thicker texture, begin more heavily influenced by the influences of both all of the instruments and all of the previous sections. Our arrival on our journey sees us return again to the original ideas. This "refined" A section was inspired by the quote by T.S. Elliot:
"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."
I would expand upon this, to know ourself for the first time, our strength, the amazing capacity or our self that we have discovered from our Journey.
