Based on an Afro Cuban Rumba, this piece is a journey that combines jazz harmonies and Latin rhythms throughout the dialogue of melodic motives and shapes. The Journey is a Joe Henderson -influenced, groove-oriented and rhythm-driven work that combines counterpoint textures with the use of theme and variations. It features the tenor saxophone, drums and percussion as soloists. Arranged for the standard big band, optional parts with woodwind doubles are also available but not necessary. Instrumentation: 2 altos, 2 tenors, baritone sax, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, bass, drums, percussion. Optional doubles: flute, piccolo and soprano sax. The highest note on the trumpet is a concert C above the staff. Medium-Difficult.
