The Indomitable Spring (2024/2026) for B-flat clarinet and piano
Original version for saxophone and pump organ

The Indomitable Spring is a set of variations on "In vernali tempore" (In Springtime), the sole secular melody in the 1582 Finnish chorale collection Piae Cantiones. The work was composed or an album celebrating the expressive possibilities of the pump organ; this arrangement for clarinet and piano makes the piece accessible to a far wider range of performers.

The title reflects both the stubbornness of the season and the mood of its composition. Written in 2024 as the world was reassembling itself after the COVID-19 pandemic – rediscovering old habits, shedding others, and building new ones in their place – the piece captures something of that complicated hope: the sense that spring had returned, but that what bloomed might look different than before.

The variations draw on the passacaglia tradition, using a descending ground bass as structural anchor while accumulating intensity and virtuosity across seven distinct episodes. The harmonic language is deliberately complex and at times unresolved, moving through ambiguity rather than away from it. The final Maestoso recontextualizes the ancient melody in a contemporary voice, arriving at a messy but hard-won resolve.
