Composed by traditional French Canadian carol. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. This edition: pdf. Christian, Christmas, Folk, Historic, Multicultural, World. 6 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1123357. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1550945).“The Huron Carol” (’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime) is generally considered the first Canadian carol, written in the Huron-Wendat Nation language c.1640 and set to an old French tune by the French Jesuit missionary priest Jean de Brébeuf. This retelling of the Nativity uses symbols and metaphors that could be understood by the Hurons, thus entering it into the tribe’s oral tradition. It was sung by the Hurons in Ontario until 1649, when the Iroquois killed Father Brébeuf, wiped out the Jesuit mission, and drove the Hurons from their home. This carol re-emerged and was translated into English by Jesse Edgar Middleton in 1926. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. It uses the English translation of Middleton and a phrase of original Wendat text for the chorus (the English/Latin is provided as well). Performance time: 3:15+-.
