THE HOLLY AND THE IVY - English Trad. Carol - 3 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE
Derek Hasted writes "This is the well-known English Traditional Carol "The Holly And The Ivy", set for 3 guitars (or a larger ensemble) and under the fingers of groups comprising intermediate players. Guitar 3 is a little easier as it stays at the low end of the neck.
I've set my arrangement in the same key that the original choral version is widely played in, and so this is a great Christmas piece for "audience participation" at a school or adult Christmas concert, and the words are included. And it's great as an instrumental too.
My arrangement features a dreamy introduction, with straightforward natural harmonics, and then three verses so that each of the parts features on the tune. To perform the whole carol, the three verses are repeated, matching the 6 verses of the original. The swapping of players and the changes of texture will keep the interest of the audience. Finally there's a Coda which echoes the opening.
The dynamics mirror where the tune lies. The piece is Bach-like and busy, so that when the guitars are accompanying singers, the guitar notes never fade away. The constant weaving of the 3 parts makes it an interesting listen as an instrumental performance.
