Popularized by Silly Sisters (Maddy Prior and June Tabor), this song has the feel of an old sea shanty, but was written by Cyril Tawney in 1959 before he left the British Royal Navy. Royal Navy sailors dubbed the Navy the Grey Funnel Line, sarcastically likening their service to a living it up on pleasure cruise line. It was nothing of the sort, and the lyrics capture the sense of loneliness and privation of long periods at sea, longing for home.
