"The Girl of my Best Friend" was first released as a B-side release in 1959 by Charlie Blackwell, but it was the version by Elvis Presley in the following year that propelled the song into the mainstream. It's melancholy lyrics about falling in love with "the girl of my best friend" means it is more "sugary sweet" than a gritty rock and roll number. A few years earlier Elvis was denounced for being a bad influence on the young, but songs like this were meant to broaden his appeal to the older generation. On the recording Elvis sings with a soft tone and his backing singers, The Jordanaires, add repetative "ahs" and "oos" which help to give the song more depth - in my arrangement the upper voices take on this role. The piano provides a simple rumba-style accompaniment, but other instruments can be added (such as guitars and gentle percussion) by following the chord symbols. The main melody contains many melismas (two or more notes sung to one word or syllable) so the breath will need to sustain the sound so it doesn't sound choppy and fragmented. There is a separate vocal score which can be printed for the singers, and this would suit an intermediate school or community choir with broken voices to sing the melody.
