The Girl I Left Behind Me is an English folk song from the Elizabethan era derived from a traditional Irish melody and said to have been played when soldiers left for war or as sailors set sail. Today, it is a popular tune played in the U.S. at old-time and bluegrass jams, contra dances and festivals. Recordings by 20th Century artists include the Fuzzy Mountain String Band (Rounder 0010), Dick Gordon and Hubert and Ted Powers. This version is an Easy Intermediate Fiddle Tune, also appropropriate for mandolin. Chords and a brief history of the tune are provided.
