I composed THE FORGOTTEN FUGUE in 1976 while living in Los Angeles, not long after my studies at the Philadelphia Musical Academy.
Inspired by my admiration for J.S. Bach, I set out to write a four-part fugue that honors the traditional style, while allowing myself the freedom to explore a more modern harmonic path.
The piece begins in F major, travels through G-flat and E-flat, and ultimately returns home again.
This work reflects my early training in voice leading, with careful attention to independence between the hands and within each line.
It’s especially rewarding for pianists who want to develop control in sustaining individual tones while shaping multiple voices at once.
I think of this piece as both a study and a personal statement—something rooted in tradition, yet a little unexpected.
It’s well suited for advanced pianists, teachers, and anyone looking for a fugue that feels both classic and new.
