The Everlasting Arms for SATB Choir and Piano has been arranged by Joseph I. Corporon (ASCAP).

Leaning On the Everlasting Arms, by Elisha A. Hoffman and Anthony J. Showalter, was inspired by Deuteronomy 33:27, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (KJV). As these words are sung, contemplate what it means to find refuge in our heavenly Father’s arms in times of fear and trial, and to allow His joy and peace to replace our loneliness and anxiety.

When Nothing But the Blood, by Robert Lowry, was first published in 1876, Hebrews 9:22 was quoted underneath the title: “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.” This song elaborates on that idea, repeatedly stating that “nothing but the blood of Jesus” purifies us. The third stanza acknowledges that “naught of good that I have done” can save. As the hymn is sung, contemplate the significance of sin in separating us from God, and the great value of Jesus’s work on the cross.

The anthem starts with a slow introduction. The next section contains a verse and refrain from each hymn. This is followed by the centerpiece of the arrangement: a vocal ostinato in the Altos, Tenors, and Basses that accompany the Sopranos, singing the 2nd and 3rd verses from Leaning On the Everlasting Arms in augmentation. The piece ends with a slow section similar to the introduction.

An optional Handbell part is included.
