The 1st violin part has the melody line with the 2nd violin part providing close harmonies and with similar rhythms to the 1st violin part. The viola and cello parts provide an on and off beat rhythmic section. The piece shouldn't be performed too fast as is often the case with the music of Scott Joplin.
