It is the annual Festival of Kites! The people have gathered every year since the devastating storm swept down from the mountains 12 years ago. The purpose of the celebration is to acknowledge the awesome power of the wind which had caused such devastation all those years ago, but also the amazing resilience of the people as they pulled together to help one another recover in the aftermath of the storm. As part of the festivities, kites of every shape and size took to the skies in a spectacular display. The emperor looked on with joy at the faces of his grandchildren as they watched the kites soar high above them. Up, up, up they would climb before spinning in the air like acrobats and then suddenly diving toward the earth only to be caught in another updraft. The highlight of the festival was the entrance of the giant dragon kite. It was a breathtaking demonstration of the skill of the handlers at harnessing the wind…as best they could. The grand finale was always the same and never failed to bring great applause from those on the ground. In the end, a "flame" shot from the dragon’s mouth and floated slowly into the sky until it disappeared from sight.
