After her sisters, Eurayle (mezzo soprano) and Stenno (alto), fend off three youths. Medusa brags of her beauty and tells them that a soldier has invited them to a Cretian feast. We pick up where Medusa instructs her sisters to prepare themselves well for their temporary escape, while she waits for them. Left alone, another suitor, has noticed her beauty, the god of the sea, Poseidon (dancer, 3 basses as his voice). He washes in, first seducing the all too willing woman, but eventually raping her. When he leaves, the statue of Athena (dramatic mezzo soprano) in the temple comes to life and is furious with Medusa for desecrating her holy place and for so long, making it into a circus. Athena then curses Medusa and her sisters to exist as living corpses. Further, she changes Medusa's once beautiful hair into a nest of snakes, so hideous that who ever looks upon her will be turned to stone. Instead of seeking her beauty, men will seek her death.
