The Cotton Phoenix is het eerste deel van het tweeluik Metropolis of the East en beschrijft de invloed van de textielindustrie op de ontwikkeling van Enschede. De compositie begint met de introductie van het Enschede-thema. Na een grote brand herrijst de stad uit zijn as en de textielindustrie bereikt een hoogtepunt. Het tweede deel beeldt de bevrijding uit, waarna Enschede mede dankzij de textielindustrie weer opkrabbelt. De compositie eindigt met het Enschede-thema: de stad in huidige vorm.

The Cotton Phoenix is the first part of the two-part work “Metropolis of the East” and describes the influence of the textile industry on the development of Enschede. The composition begins introducing the Enschede-theme. After a big fire, the city rises from the ashes and the textile industry reaches a peak. The second part describes the liberation after the war, where Enschede, thanks to the industry, is able to recover. The piece ends with the Enschede-theme; the city in its present form.

The Cotton Phoenix est la première partie du dyptique Metropolis of the East et décrit l’influence de l’industrie textile sur le développement de la ville d’Enschede. La pièce commence avec l’introduction du thème d’Enschede. Après un grand incendie la ville renaît de ses cendres et l’industrie textile atteint son climax. La deuxième partie représente la libération, et la remise sur pied de la ville grâce à l’industrie. Le morceau finit avec le thème d’Enschede : la ville dans sa forme actuelle.

The Cotton Phoenix ist der erste Teil des Diptychons Metropolis of the East und beschreibt den Einfluss der Textilindustrie auf die Entwicklung der Stadt Enschede. Die Komposition beginnt mit mit dem Enschede-Thema. Nach einem großen Brand ersteht die Stadt neu aus ihrer Asche und die Textilindustrie erreicht ihren Höhepunkt. Der zweite Teil beschreibt die Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, wo sich Enschede - auch dank der Textilindustrie - wieder erholt. Die Komposition endet mit dem Enschede-Thema: die Stadt in ihrer heutigen Form.
