James Olcott has written this as the teacher's accompaniment to the advanced trumpeter student, who will be playing the Etudes Trancendentales by Charlier. Although the studies are studies intended to improve different technical aspects each time, they are filled with melodic and harmonic interest all the way. It is impossible to get bored during work. I play the teacher's role on a violin, and there is plenty of technical challenge for the violin too, I can promise you. Really demanding for intonation. It is an ingenious idea to provide an accompaniment to nudge the student along, and we have enjoyed working with this material. The print is clear and bar numbers are provided.The actual book is not a bibliotechnical miracle: it is made of huge sheets stapled in the middle, so it doesn't sit well on the stand, and the pages don't stay open. One has to make contraptions with clothes pegs to keep one's place. The 'etudes volume is a conventional bound book and easier to use.
