The Calm was composed by Jim Stewart in 2002 for the Opera New Brunswick production of The Marco Polo Suite - a Folk Opera. This Chase arrangement grew out of Christine's arrangement for that same production a String Quartet by the same name. The clarity of the wind soloists adding their textures to the & the spiritual melodic nature of this piece. Their voices rising, each with a grateful calming voice, not interrupting..... welcoming the strings to join with them. The addition of the Woodwind Quintet feels right.
