The Broadway Limited was composed for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Tubaphonium Ensemble in December 1994 at the request of Gary Bird. This fanfare in a rack style was composed for the ensemble’s performance at the United States Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Conference in 1995, where it was premiered. The Broadway Limited is the name of the train that Dr. Bird rode on a trip from Pittsburgh to Chicago to attend the 1994 Mid West International Band and Orchestra Clinic. The instrumentation is 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas. An optional rock drum set player may be added to help with the “rock style” character. In this case the drummer should read the Euphonium 1 part as a reference.
In 2009 Gary Bird organized several recording sessions in Indiana, PA to record some of Gregory Fritze’s compositions that featured the tuba, including The Broadway Limited. The CD Tuba Safari was released on March 2010 on Albany Records.
