This tune has been in the American collective memory since the early 1900's . It was associated with the abolitionist movement during the civil war era. The tune was borrowed from a methodist hymn entitled " Say Brothers won't you meet us," and was later used as the melody for the folk tune "John Brown's Body." Only minimal pedalling is offered, as the arranger feels that this can be done according to the pianist's wishes.
