In this scene, Jafar uses sorcery to shapeshift in an attempt to reign as Sultan of Agrabah. Despite being stripped of his royal facade, Aladdin relentlessly fights back in an amazing showdown of power, strength and wit. This score cue heavily references the character leitmotifs for Jafar, as well as song melodies from "One Jump Ahead" (riff-raff, street rat), and "Friend Like Me". Composer Alan Menken spoke of this cue, "From Mermaid to Beauty to Aladdin, there have always been the big action-adventure battle sequences. This is where Disney outdoes the Broadway musical.”
Aladdin (1992) was the winner of 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow for Alan Menken. Orchestrations for the film were done by Danny Troob and Michael Starobin, elevating Menken’s modern Broadway sensibility with rich, symphonic textures in Menken's signature thematic style.
This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for Intermediate+ pianists. Chords are marked throughout. An additional staff is shown as needed to include instrumental elements that could not be fully condensed (for the performer's reference).
