Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Kevin R. Tam. 20th Century,Classical. Score and parts. 204 pages. Kevin R. Tam #431061. Published by Kevin R. Tam (A0.1023848).
In "The Band Came Back", Sousa’s musical brilliance shines bright. His score explores every aspect and nuance of what the concert band really is capable of, section by section, drilling down into the characteristic nature of each instrument. Always the showman, he carries out this musical feat beginning with only one instrumentalist on stage, the first Oboe player. We soon hear off-stage, the upper woodwinds and the oboe player begins to play along with them. Band members start to take the stage and with a new musical theme for each, these players are featured until another player or section joins the stage until finally, the band has come back and are all playing together. In this humoresque we hear numerous interwoven melodies including Listen to the Mockingbird, Old Folks at Home, The Campbells are Coming, Dixie, Haydn's Surprise Symphony, and excerpts from his own compositions including the Washington Post march. Concluding in grand style and over the top proportions, Sousa pays tribute to one of his own musical heroes, Richard Wagner.
