Chorus Choir (SATB Chorus) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1668030

Composed by David W. Barber. This edition: pdf, streaming. A Cappella, Comedy, Pop. 12 pages. David W. Barber #1233770. Published by David W. Barber (A0.1668030).

I wrote this piece in 2014 on commission from a community choir that wanted to perform “something political.” Rob Ford was running for his second term as Toronto’s mayor, on the heels of scandals that included an infamous crack video, sexist and racist remarks and several “drunken stupors.” As a newspaper journalist, I was fascinated by the overall story (though I had little direct hand in covering any of it). And as a composer, I thought it would provide rich material for a story ballad. An English version of the Mexican narcocorrido, if you will.
Ford’s cancer diagnosis (and later death in 2016) put thoughts of any performance on hold. It seemed in poor taste at the time. So I tucked this little piece away in the metaphorical drawer. But now more than a decade has passed. And with a new Netflix documentary (Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem) reviving interest in the story, I thought I’d bring it out again. Depending on tempo and rubato, it runs about 3½ to 4 minutes.

Here’s just a taste of the lyrics:

Rob Ford, Rob Ford,
Rob Ford, Rob Ford:

Rob Ford was a councillor
renowned for being stingy.
Money for the arts?
Money for the poor?
Rob Ford says “Shut the front door!”

He looked around
and he said right there,
“I will be Toronto’s mayor.
“The city is lacking.
“I must get cracking.”
And even though
he has no brains,
He vowed to stop
the gravy train.
(Oh yes he did.)
etc.
