Loud, always right (even when playing in the wrong key), love high notes, and play the same repertoire over and over and over again. So why not celebrate our favourite personality type in a piece of music? The Arrogant Trumpeter features all of those attributes in a comedic performance by both the Trumpeter and accompanist, in a piece that feautures multiple different syles and genres, making this the perfect addition to any performance!
The piece opens with a cadenza fanfare played by the Trumpeter, before leading into a softer section with a twist - the trumpeter is playing in the wrong key! After the accompanist corrects this, they continue with this lyrical section, now both in the same key, before suddenly picking it up with a Bossa Nova section. Returning to the Trumpet's loud habitat, the Arrogant Trumpeter then returns to a lyrical section once more, slower in tempo but with fast rhythms. Once the Trumpeter's shown off their lyrical playing they show off the well-known iconic Trumpet pieces, briefly passing through the Hummel, Haydn and Arutunian concerti, before the piano takes over with the iconic Petroshka trumpet solo, before the two end with a short virtuosic take on Mahler 5's opening. The last note truly embraces a Trumpet's true nature, by holding a very loud, long high note, that is intentially clipped to sound like a split note.
