William Butler Yeats ends his short story The Adoration of the Magi with the narrator describing a centuries old Gaelic prayer…" when I pray against the demons I repeat a prayer which was made I know not how many centuries ago to help some poor Gaelic man or woman who had suffered with a suffering like mine.”The ancient prayer is presented for female voices and solo violin followed by The Magi introducing piano and choir. Yeats’ Magi “appear and disappear” in modern times, with “their ancient faces like rain-beaten stones”. They continue to search and wait for Christ’s second coming with their “eyes still fixed, hoping, hoping”.
